Commenting on the Queen's life

Posted

I don't happen to be one of the Americans who cannot get enough news about England's Royal family; for instance, I happen to think if you are trying to avoid the press, you don't sit down for an interview with Oprah.

But I'm not being critical, either, I have always kind of enjoyed watching Harry defy tradition and decorum. And, for sure, I admire both Will and his brother for doing their bit for the Royal Air Force. I recently read a statement by Will about how much some of his flights bothered him after he got back; I'm sure he saw some grisly sights.

But I recently read a list of 25 things you probably did not know about the Queen, and found them to be  rather interesting. She does sound like someone's grandmother, in some ways, but in others, as in the fact she just now stopped riding horses (on doctor's orders) she is rather amazing.

Number one, and I had to smile at this, she saves rubber bands. Well, who doesn't? You never know when you will need a rubber band; I looked all over for one just the other day. And, they say she has a huge ball of rubber bands to prove it!! Don't you love it?

She also turns off lights! She is my kind of woman! Now that I am totally responsible for the electric bill, I am even more zealous about them.

She loves jokes, and likes to play them on folks. I suspected as much when she went all in on the James Bond fun during London's host of the Olympics just a few years ago; she looked up from her desk and smiled when he appeared, and later, we saw her supposedly alighting in a hot air balloon.

She is fond of chocolate, and what woman is not, and guess what? Her favorite is Kit Kats!

She has a cuppa Earl Gray every afternoon; so she is truly English in that regard. I try to do that, but end up with decaf coffee, instead. I have all kinds of tea, and I do enjoy some occasionally, but I just can't get all that enthused about it.

And, get this, she claims she could have been happy as a farmer's wife! Now, I was believing the things on this list until this last one. I get that her favorite place is in Scotland, at Balmoral, and that she loves all animals, for instance. But I don't think she knows whereof she speaks if she sincerely believes she could have been a farmer's wife.

Somehow, I just can't see her cooking for threshers, for instance, or gathering eggs, or milking cows, or digging potatoes. I realize she drove a Jeep during the war, and again, I admire her for that, but farming is not all driving vehicles, believe me!! In fact, we wives do very little of that, the farmer prefers to do the driving, thank you very much. And when it comes to backing a load of wheat into the shed before it rains, I think the Queen and I could agree, it's best if the farmer does the driving.

All in all, I thought the list just emphasized the fact she is still  a lot like every woman I know; except for that last item, of course; I do know a lot of gals who would not want to be a farmer's wife! And they are happy to inform me of that, too; they just don't know what they are missing.
