The public and all media outlets are invited to a dedication ceremony for Stearns Hall, Wayne State College’s new residence hall, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 30.

Wayne State named the new residence hall in honor of Dr. Sheila M. Stearns’ distinguished leadership of the college from 1999 to 2003. Stearns served as the tenth president of Wayne State and was the first woman to lead the institution. Stearns passed away May 23, 2023.

Hal Stearns, husband of the late Dr. Stearns, will be among the ceremony’s guest speakers, which also include Dr. Paul Turman, chancellor of the Nebraska State College System; Dr. Marysz Rames, president of Wayne State College; and Greg Evans, a senior resident assistant in Stearns Hall.

Stearns Hall is located on the east side of campus, across the street from the Center for Applied Technology building. Visitors may park in Lot 10 north of Stearns Hall and enter the hall through the main entrance on the west side of the building.

Stearns Hall is the first residence hall built since the construction of Bowen Hall in 1966. The four-story structure accommodates 276 new and returning students and features 168 suite-style beds and 108 traditional beds. The main lobby has an open kitchen, two televisions, a lounge area, pool table, and a front desk reception area. Each floor above the main lobby has a smaller lounge area. There is an exercise area on the second floor.
