The area outside of F & M Bank, at 321 Main Street, now exhibits a creation by Michael Fluent, of Wayne, entitled “AC-PC.”
Comprised of stainless steel and glass, the piece has acted as an eye-catching addition to the popular route in town.
The Contemporary Sculptor found his passion for creating art in the jungle of Vietnam. In the jungle, he began carving sculptures and reading books on welding.
After returning stateside, he continued to work carving wood, metal forging and welding.
Fluent is currently featured in galleries across the nation, with works ranging from figurative dancers taking leaps to multi-media steel and glass installations.
With passion and curiosity, the sculptor continues to explore new concepts, designs and materials.
He also has found high involvement in art clubs and mentoring other artists. Some of these groups include the Northeast Nebraska Woodcarvers, Norfolk Arts Center Member, Fluent Artworks, ABANA Workshop and more.
Additionally, positioned near Johnnie Byrd Brewing Company at 121 N Pearl Street, “Faces” by Skip Willits of Camanche, Iowa, was formed out of recycled steel.
The welding technique Willits uses to create most of his work was taught to him at age ten by his father who worked in a welding shop.
He learned all he knows from his father, from the characteristics of materials such as steel, cast iron and aluminum to the various welding techniques; arc, TIG, MIG, torch, etc.
In 1983, he produced and installed his first major public sculpture.
In the years since, he has continued to create large and small art pieces for the world to enjoy.
Annually, he participates in numerous exhibitions and produces commissioned work across the United States, Canada and Europe.
He lives and works, happily, on the banks of the Mississippi River.
“The things that I make are integral parts of who I am,” Willits said.
Soon, the Wayne Public Art Committee hopes to have the Ottocast app updated for public use. At that time, visitors will have the opportunity to listen to statements read by each artist regarding their piece.
