OMAHA — Wakefield junior Jordan Metzler was going for her personal best in the Class C 800-meter finals Saturday afternoon.

She got it — and more.

Metzler crossed the finish line in a time of 2:14.35 and not only set a personal best, but made history with a Class C state record and a new championship standard for the class to earn a gold medal at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships at Burke Stadium.

Metzler came into the race with the eighth-fastest time in Class C and was in the middle of the pack after the first 400 meters, but made her push in the final 250 meters and passed three runners, taking the lead coming off the final turn and sprinting the final 100 meters home for the state title.

Jordan’s time was almost a second ahead of the old record, shared by Marissa Bongers of East Butler (2009) and Rylee Rice of Ainsworth (2017).
