Short agenda greets commissioners

The majority of Tuesday's meeting of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners involved updates from Wayne County Emergency Manager Nic Kemnits.

Kemnitz shared information on replacing an awning on the county's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) trailer. The awning was damaged during a storm at last year's county fair. The cost of the work is less than the insurance deductible and will be paid for by the county.

In addition, the air conditioning unit on the trailer is 20 years old and in need of replacement. The cost for the air conditioner is $1,026.79 with an additional $168 for parts. The new unit would be more efficient and possibly eliminate the need for a window air conditioner when the trailer is at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Kemnitz also told the commissioners he is working on replacing two iPads that are nine years old and a rugged laptop that is nearly 10 years old. The laptop is used for radio programming and not working well.

Funds for these purchases have been included in this year's budget.

Kemnitz will be attending State Fire School May 15-18 in Grand Island for training with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He also talked with the commissioners about his role in fires in the Broken Bow area earlier this year. He said he helped coordinate some of operations as there were a number of departments and numerous pieces of equipment assisting with the fire.

Prior to the commissioners' meeting, the board, acting as the Wayne County Board of Equalization, approved six applications for Exemption for Motor Vehicle Taxes, Form 457.

Treasurer Lisa Lindsay said the requests were from the same entities as in the past and included 11 vehicles owned by Providence Medical Center.

Assessor Dawn Duffy brought forth two corrections on personal property for the 2023-2024 tax year.

Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet in regular session on Tuesday, May 20 at 9 a.m. in the Wayne County Courtroom.
