The Farmer's Wife: Discussing weather throughout the world

Posted

We are having a mini heat wave this week, and I think the ice in the cul de sac in front of the house is finally going away.  I don't mind snow, but ice is a different story.  Actually, we've had very little snow, compared to some of you in northeast Nebraska.

Friend, Virginia, of Creighton/Verdigre area, says there is forty inches of the white stuff around her farm home! That's a lot! She was in Lincoln this weekend and thought she had gone south for a vacation..

Actually, I just read the column in the Lincoln paper by the nutritionist; they had loaded horses and headed for Texas, hoping to have a few days' vacation where it was warm, and so far, they had not found that place! Austin still has thousands of people without power. You just never know this time of year.

And then there are the pictures from Turkey and none of us has any reason to complain! My heart goes out to the first responders and to the staff at the hospital. There is no way they can keep up. It's another example of how small our world is; when catastrophe happens, no matter how far away, we see it on the evening news.

I've been rereading old columns again; and I've found myself repeating a lot! Sometimes, in the same month! Do you think age has anything to do with that? There was a time when they were all about sports; because we had grandkids in three different schools, involved in all kinds of sports. (No wrestling, now that I think of it. It's going to take me awhile to get used to girls wrestling!)

I found a comment in one about two years ago, recommending a book by a Swedish author, A Man Called Ove. I don't even know why I read it, or if someone recommended it to me. But I enjoyed it; so much so, that when I realized there is a movie based on it starring Tom Hanks, I thought I'd probably go see it. There was already a Swedish version, with English subtitles, but I thought this would be my “one movie a year.” It's A Man Called Otto, and if you have opportunity, take advantage; I think you will appreciate it.

It hasn't had a lot of promotion, and yet, everyone you talk to, at least, here in Lincoln, has seen it, and wonder if  you have.  In fact, the gal who cuts my hair didn't even say the name of it, she just asked if I had seen the movie yet. And I knew which one she was referring to. Isn't that curious?  It's like we're a “silent audience,” ready to “pass it on.” Just a quiet, sweet cadre of groupies, and I hope you can see it, too. Meanwhile, stay warm!
