Voters in Wayne School District 17 have approved a $27,945,000 bond to allow for construction and renovation of the district's facilities.
Wayne County Clerk Debra Finn said the vote was 943 votes for the bond and 913 votes against.
The 1,856 votes cast represent 56% of the eligible voters.
The Canvassing Board will meet on Thursday, March 16 at 1:30 p.m. to certify the election results.
The passage of the bond will allow the district to move forward with the construction of a new building for Pre-K through second grade, the addition of seven new classrooms at the high school, renovation of the current Lecture Hall at the Junior-Senior High School, movement of the current weight room and renovating that area for the ag program at the school.
The additional building will allow for additional space at the current elementary school for students in grades three through six.
"We are very thankful and grateful to the Community of Wayne for entrusting the school district with the opportunity to provide new and improved educational facilities for our students and staff. We appreciate all of the support we receive from the patrons of Wayne Community Schools and we are excited about the future possibilities these new and renovated facilities will provide," said Wayne Community Schools' Superintendent Dr. Mark Lenihan.
Dr. Lenihan also thanked "all those who served on the Community Facilities and Assessment Group for the work they put in over the last several months to come up with a plan to best serve the needs of our students while being mindful of our tax-paying patrons."
In coming months the district's architect will work with the Construction Manager at Risk to finalize plans before construction begins. No official timeline for this has been established.
