History was made on Tuesday during the first-ever girls only NSAA State Wrestling Championships where wrestlers will now have to fight their way through the consolation rounds or have advanced to the semifinal round with an opportunity for gold still on the table.

From the CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha, two of the five Wayne High girls went 2-0 while two went 1-1 and one suffered a first round loss.

In the team race through day one, the Wayne girls are tied for eighth with 29 points with Omaha Westside leading the way with 55 points and the Norfolk girls following in second with 43.5 points.

Sophomore Essynce Owens-Webb (100) improved to 31-6 following wins of major decision (14-0) and by fall (1:37) while junior Nyla Bolles (135) moved to 38-4 thanks to back-to-back pins in 1:30 and 1:09. Both will be in action Wednesday afternoon during the semifinal round and are in line for a medal on the podium.

Junior Serenity Heil-Ellis (125) and sophomore Anna Naeve (145) both went 1-1 as senior Kadence Rees (155) suffered a first round defeat and will have to fight off elimination early Wednesday.

Also, Wakefield’s Naomi Nelson (135) suffered a first round loss falling to the first round consolation match.

Class B team leaders through day one are Yutan with 58.5 points followed by Lakeview with 40 points.
