WSC women’s golf team members earn academic nods

The Wayne State women’s golf team had three players named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team.

Viktoria Bortkiewicz-Hamelin, Abbigail Brodersen and Abbey Kurmel received the honor selected by College Sports Communicators that recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. Student athletes must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 or better to earn the award.

Bortkiewicz-Hamelin carried a 3.8 GPA majoring in sport management. She appeared in nine tournaments this year and posted a scoring average of 86.29 with one top 10 finish – tied for eighth at the Nebraska Intercollege Invite last fall. Viktoria earned NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence honors and received the NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic With Distinction Award and served on the WSC Student Athlete Advisory Committee the last two years including treasurer this season.         

Brodersen maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA majoring in construction management/drafting and design. She earned All-NSIC Second Team honors this season with a scoring average of 80.76 to rank fourth all-time at WSC for a single season. Brodersen had nine rounds in the 70’s with one top five finish this season, tied for second at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Invite last fall. 

Kurmel posted a 3.83 GPA this season majoring in graphic design. On the course this season, she had one top-five and two top-10 finishes with a scoring average of 81.24 with seven of her last 10 rounds in the 70’s. Kurmel shot season-best scores of 76-77 (153) at the Newman Spring Invite, placed fourth at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Invite last fall and tied for ninth at the SMSU Spring Challenge in Arizona. 

Academic All-District honorees advance to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America ballot with All-America honorees announced June 22.
