#12 SMSU tops #7 Wayne State in five; double-doubles by Romano and Robles

With one more home match of three straight slated for Saturday, #7 Wayne State College was tested during a week night outing.

From Rice Auditorium, WSC welcomed #12 Southwest Minnesota State.

After Wayne State College took a 2-0 lead in the match, the visiting Mustangs came storming back to win in five sets. Southwest Minnesota State improved to 18-3 (9-3 NSIC) as the Wildcats fell to 17-4 (10-2 NSIC).

WSC is now 0-3 in five-set matches while SMSU moved to 3-1 when it goes to the fifth set this season.

Scores of the match favored the Mustangs 24-26, 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-12.

Molly Romano posted a new-career high in assists along with her seventh double-double of the season thanks to 56 assists and 12 digs (one kill/one block) as Channatee Robles added her third double-double with a team-high 19 kills and 16 digs (four blocks). Brooke Peltz led WSC in digs with 28.

Taya Beller added 17 kills, seven digs and eight blocks (two solo); Maggie Brahmer (.333) tallied 17 kills and six blocks as Brooklyn Kusler tacked on eight kills, four digs and a solo block. Other digs came from Allie Petry (13), Anna Borner (seven) and Taylor Bunjer who totaled five digs and seven blocks.

Kusler finished with three service aces as Beller, Romano, Peltz and Borner all had an ace.

SMSU outhit the Wildcats, .235 to .199. Wayne State College held advantages in ace (7-4) and blocks (15-7).
