4-H has more to offer than the County Fair, it's year-round

With county fair season behind us, some people may think 4-H is finished for another year. However, 4-H is a year-round program that provides youth with opportunities to learn by doing, develop life skills, and explore new interests.

While the traditional 4-H club experience and county fair remain important parts of the program, they are just two of the many ways 4-H reaches young people in our communities.

Two important ways Nebraska 4-H connects with youth beyond traditional 4-H clubs are through school enrichment and after school programs.

4-H school enrichment programs bring hands-on learning experiences into the classroom during the school day. These programs are offered in partnership with local schools and may be delivered by Extension staff, 4-H volunteers, or classroom teachers. Using research-based curricula aligned with Nebraska Department of Education content standards, school enrichment programs supplement classroom instruction with engaging, hands-on activities that help students explore new concepts and apply what they learn.

Through these experiences, students may explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), career readiness, leadership, and other topics that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences. School enrichment also introduces students to 4-H and encourages them to explore additional opportunities available through the program.

4-H after-school programs provide educational experiences outside the regular school day, often in schools or community centers. Through partnerships with community organizations, Nebraska Extension helps expand access to quality learning opportunities in safe, supportive environments.

After school programs incorporate 4-H curricula and positive youth development principles to help young people build knowledge, strengthen life skills, and discover their interests. Extension also provides resources, training, and support to help afterschool staff offer meaningful educational activities that encourage youth to learn, grow, and succeed.

Both school enrichment and afterschool programs allow 4-H to reach youth who may not participate in a traditional 4-H club. These experiences provide opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, explore potential careers, work with others, and build confidence through hands-on learning.

As the new school year gets underway, it is a great time to remember that 4-H learning continues long after the county fairgrounds are empty. Whether youth participate through a traditional 4-H club, a classroom experience, or an after school program, they can benefit from the opportunities 4-H provides to learn, lead, and make a difference in their communities.

4-H is more than a county fair. It is a year-round opportunity for young people to learn by doing and build skills that last a lifetime.
