After walk-off loss, Wayne baseball bounces back

After losing on a walk-off hit Monday, the Wayne High baseball team bounced back with a rescheduled win on the road Tuesday.

On Monday, the Blue Devils dropped a 5-4 decision at Fort Calhoun, as the hosts came back from a 4-0 deficit to claim the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Wayne used a sacrifice fly and two Pioneer errors to score all of their runs in the third inning. Jacob Kneifl scored on a Blake Bartos sacrifice fly, and Josh Lutt, Zane Jackson and Gunnar Jorgensen all came home on errors to stake the Blue Devils to the early lead.

Fort Clahoun scored two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to tie the game, , then got a walk-off single by Nathan Premer to complete the comeback and give the Pioneers the win.

Wayne was limited to three hits in the game, with Bartos, Lutt and Trevor DeBoer all getting singles. Lutt took the pitching loss in relief of DeBoer.

On Tuesday, Wayne made up a game at Central City/Fullerton and came away with a 9-4 win in a game played at Central City.

Wayne wasted no time in taking control of the game, scoring six runs in the first and adding two more in the second.

In the first, Reid Korth had a two-run double and came home along with Victor Kniesche on a wild pitch. A Central City/Fullerton error allowed two more runs to score as Wayne sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening stanza.

In the second, Wayne added two more runs to make it an 8-2 game. Jackson brought home Hagan Miller on a sacrifice fly, and a DeBoer ground out brought Jorgensen home for the second run of the inning.

After single runs in the third and fourth for Central City/Fullerton, Wayne added their final run in the fifth on an RBI single by Lutt, scoring Brennan O’Reilly, to help Wayne finish off the win.

Miller, Jackson, Korth and Kneifl each had two hits to lead Wayne’s nine-hit attack. Kneifl, Korth and Miller all had doubles, Lutt had three RBI’s and Korth added two. Kneifl pitched four innings to get the win, with Jackson finishing off in relief for the 5-5 Blue Devils.

Wayne hosts Omaha South for Parents Night on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Hank Overin Field.
