Alice Mae Johnson, 95, of Wakefield, died Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wakefield, with Pastor William Bertrand officiating. The burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh–Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.
Alice Mae Johnson was born in Bancroft on Oct. 17, 1929, the daughter of Otto and Violet (Burcham) Brummund. She was baptized on Dec. 1, 1929 in Bancroft. She was confirmed on May 28, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Winside. Following her graduation from Winside High School in 1947, she attended Wayne State College, earning her teaching certificate. On June 10, 1951 she married Eugene Johnson at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Winside. To this union, three sons were born: Randall, Alan, and Terry. While she was teaching, Alice continued her education, earning a Master’s degree. She taught at the Wakefield Elementary School for many years before her retirement.
She was active with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wakefield, the VFW Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, Master Gardeners, the Retired Teachers Association, the Wakefield Library Board, and the Wakefield Tree Board. She was well known in Wakefield for planting flowers at her school garden, the Wakefield Post Office and the Eaton Baseball Field. She enjoyed attending many reading and teaching conferences, as well as gardening workshops.
Survivors include her son, Randy (Sheryl) Johnson of Brighton, Colorado and their children, Brian (Courtney) Johnson of Fort Lupton, Colorado, Brent (Brandy) Johnson, and their daughter Taytum of Lincoln; son AJ (Diane) Johnson of Wakefield, and their daughter Amber (Brian) Gamble, and their children, Jordyn and Easton of Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene, in 2002; her son, Terry Johnson, in 1966; her sister, Caroline Peterson; and a brother, Elmer Brummund.
