Ankeny produces three hits, Redden limits St. Paul/Palmer to one run

In the middle of a three-game home stretch, Wayne High baseball continued their Class C season.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, the Blue Devils welcomed the co-op of St. Paul/Palmer on Thursday.

A pair of four-run innings for Wayne led the charge during an 11-1 victory. WHS improved to 8-5 as St. Paul/Palmer fell to 4-4 dropping back-to-back.

St. Paul/Palmer began the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning.

Wayne followed with four runs an half of an inning later. Senior Gavin Redden started with a RBI single scoring sophomore Adrian Contreras, senior Calvin Ankeny added a RBI groundout driving in sophomore Jaxson Kneifl, junior Drew Reinhardt reached on an error with Redden crossing the plate while sophomore Chase Sturm closed out the inning with a sac-fly driving in Ankeny.

Neither team scored in the second as Wayne High added two more runs in the home half of the third to lead 6-1. Sturm reached on an error scoring Rodriguez as Ankeny stole home and scored.

The Blue Devils then posted a four-run fourth inning. Redden doubled in Kneifl, Rodriguez tallied a sac-fly scoring Redden, Ankeny crossed the plate off an error as Sturm used a sac-fly scoring Reinhardt.

WHS closed out the final inning with one more run in the fifth to win by run rule thanks to a RBI base hit by Ankeny scoring junior Brodey Munter.

Final favored Wayne winning 11-1 while outhitting St. Paul/Palmer, 8-5. Wayne committed three errors compared to four by their opponent.

Calvin Ankeny singled three times, drove in two runs and scored three times; Gavin Redden singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice as Jaxson Kneifl tripled and scored twice.

Brodey Munter and Adrian Contreras both singled and scored; Alex Rodriguez accounted for a RBI and run scored; Chase Sturm added three RBI as Drew Reinhardt scored.

Redden (60 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing one run off five hits while striking out seven batters and walking one.
