Annual golf tournament raises funds for WSC

The 16th Annual Larry Smith Golf Tournament was held August 9 at Cedarview Country Club in Laurel.

A total of 23 teams participated in the 18-hole, four-person scramble, raising funds for the Larry Smith Memorial Scholarship at Wayne State College.

The scholarship was established in memory of Larry Smith, who lost his battle with cancer in 1998. His sister, a longtime Wayne resident and former employee in the Wayne State College registrar’s office, created the scholarship as a way to honor Larry’s legacy and passion for athletics.

Over the years, the Smith family has continued to grow the scholarship fund through the annual golf tournament, believing it to be a meaningful way to support student-athletes and keep Larry’s memory alive.

Winners of the tournament were Shawn Nolte, Austin Lueth, Nate Salmon and Alex Salmon.
