Wayne/Wakefield battled from behind twice, but the third time wasn't the charm as Thurston/Cuming County came away with a 4-3 win in eight innings in action Tuesday at Hank Overin Field.
The two winless teams battled to a scoreless draw through four innings before the Thunder struck for two in the fifth to take the lead.
Wayne came back with two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Zane Jackson's one-out double plated Brennan O'Reilly, who led off the inning with a single. Tucker Nichols, running as a courtesy runner for Adam Bentjen, later scored on a single by Noah Braun to tie the game at 2-2.
The Thunder got a run in the seventh, but Wayne/Wakefield answered in the bottom of the inning. Isaac Camarena reached base on a dropped third strike with one out, stole second and scored on a single by Julio Sanchez to make it 3-3.
The Thunder broke the tie in extra innings with a two-out single in the eighth. Wayne/Wakefield put the tying run on base with a single by Caden Korth, but that was as close as they would get as the visitors came away with the win.
Both teams had six hits in the contest. Korth had two hits, Jackson doubled and O'Reilly, Sanchez and Braun added singles. Sanchez pitched 7 1/3 innings in the loss, striking out nine and allowing five hits and one walk.
Wayne/Wakefield, 0-10, hosts Platteview in a 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Hank Overin Field.
