Wayne had the tying run 90 feet away, but were unable to bring it home as a seventh-inning comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss to Lakeview that eliminated the Post 43 Seniors from the Class B Area 5 tournament Monday at Hank Overin Field.
Lakeview got all of their runs in the first inning, taking advantage of an error, three hits and three walks to stake themselves to an early 5-0 advantage.
Wayne got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Payten Gamble scored on a Lakeview throwing error. They added another run in the fifth when Tyler Lutt scored on a Justin Dean groundout to make it a 5-2 game.
In the seventh, Wayne led off with a Lutt single and Gamble reached on an error to put two in scoring position with nobody out. Zane Jackson brought them both home with a two-run double, and pinch-runner Josh Lutt moved to third on a groundout, but Lakeview struck out Brennen O’Reilly to end the game and eliminate Wayne (17-13) from the tournament.

West Point hands O’Neill first loss – Top-seeded West Point handed No. 2 seed O’Neill its first loss Monday with a 5-2 win in the first game of the evening. West Point got the early lead on the first of four O’Neill errors and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Kobe Benne doubled and scored on another error. O’Neill got within a run at 3-2 in the sixth on a Dana Jurgensmeier RBI single that scored Bailey Thompson, but West Point countered with two insurance runs in the seventh with an RBI single by Luke Knad and a fielder’s choice by Austin Streeter. O’Neill will face the winner of Tuesday’s 5 p.m. machup between West Point and Lakeview for the area title.
