All five area schools came away with at least one medal competing with the best of the best in Northeast Nebraska at Thursday's Norfolk Track and Field Classic at Norfolk High School.
Highlighting the day was Wayne High sophomore Kylie Hammer, who won the long jump to highlight a four-medal day. Her winning jump of 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches won by just over an inch, and the top four jumpers all were within 2 1/4 inches, with teammate Tarah Stegemann taking fourth at 16-5.
Hammer also medaled in the triple jump, tying for fourth, finished sixth in the 100 and just missed out on a win while anchoring the 1,600-meter relay, finishing third by less than a second behind Humphrey St. Francis and Crofton.
Stegemann was one of three Wayne High girls who earned multiple medals for top-six finishes. She was also on the 1,600 relay. Gabi Meyer was fifth in the 800 and was on the 1,600 relay as well.
Savannah Nelson of Wakefield was also a double medalist at the Classic, taking fifth in the long jump and fourth in the 400-meter run.
The area did well in the throwing events, as Wayne's Danica Schaefer placed third in the shot put, while Jenna Trenhaile was second and Kelly Tweedy of Winside placed sixth in the discus. On the track, Lexi Oswald of Allen was third and Jamie Dolph of Wakefield finished fifth in the 3,200.
In boys' action, Malik Knox of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had the biggest medal haul among area athletes. He finished an impressive third while running out of Lane 8 in the 200-meter dash, and also finished sixth in the 100 and anchored the 400-meter relay to a sixth-place finish.
Dylan Hurlbert of Wakefield earned two medals, taking third in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. Grayson McBride was Wayne's lone boys medalist, taking third in the high jump, and Aaron Haahr of LCC was third in the 3,200.
