Allen and Winside will both be represented in next week’s Nebraska State Track and Field Championships after both schools earned qualifying finishes in the D-1 district meet Wednesday at Russ Hochstein Field in Hartington.
In girls action, Winside qualified two athletes and Allen picked up a single qualifier. Winside’s Callie Finn earned her third trip to state with a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:50.50, while teammate Alex Bargstadt came away with runner-up honors in the discus with a best throw of 100 feet, 6 inches. Allen’s Bri Hingst won a close race in the 300-meter hurdle finals, as her time of 50.5 seconds qualified her for state.
In boys action, Allen qualified in four events and Winside got its first male qualifier since 2012 with William Bullard taking runner-up honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.8. Allen won the 3,200-meter relay in 8:59.5, and Tayler Kumm qualified in three individual events with wins in the 1,600 (4:55.3) and 3,200 (10:37.8) along with a runner-up finish in the 800 (2:09.0).
The Nebraska State Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, May 19-20, in Omaha.
