AREA BASKETBALL – Wayne boys advance in Mid State

Here are Tuesday’s area high school basketball highlights:

Boys Basketball
Wayne advances in Mid State –
Wayne High held off a fourth-quarter rally by Battle Creek to post a 65-60 win in the opening round of the Mid State Conference tournament. Wayne built a 10-point lead late in the first half thanks to 3-pointers by Grayson McBride and Will Anderson and led by eight at the half. They extended the lead to 13 points and hung on in the final period to advance to Friday’s semifinals. Jack Evetovich scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Blue Devils, while McBride added 14 points and Mason Lee put in 12. The Blue Devils play in the semifinals Friday at 7:45 p.m. at Northeast Community College.

Girls Basketball
Randolph eliminates Wakefield in L&C –
Randolph jumped out to a 17-2 first-quarter lead and eliminated Wakefield with a 47-22 decision in the quarterfinals of the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament at Winside High School. Savannah Nelson led Wakefield with nine points and Megan Borg added six for the Trojans.
LCC edges Winnebago in consolation – Laurel-Concord-Coleridge won a tight matchup against Winnebago in consolation action of the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament posting a 48-43 win. Lorna Maxon had career bests in points (16) and rebounds (12) to lead the Lady Bears. Katelyn Cook added nine points, Emily Hangman had eight points and a team-best 15 rebounds and Katie Leapley had 10 rebounds.
Winside falls in consolation play – The Winside girls basketball team dropped a 62-27 decision to Creighton in consolation play of the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament at Homer.
