Firefighters from Wakefield and the surrounding area responded to a fire at one of the chicken barns owned by Michael Foods.

The Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 11:30 a.m. of a structure fire at Gardner Growers 2, located four miles north and 1 1/2 miles west of Wakefield.

Wakefield Fire Chief Adam Ulrich said "the building was fully involved (in fire) when we arrived on scene."

Mutual aid was provided by departments from Allen/Waterbury, Wayne, Concord, Dixon, Emerson and Pender.

Additionally, water was provided by CVA and traffic control was handled by the Dixon County Sheriff's Department.

The fire was located in one of the 10 buildings that house poultry from one day old to 13 weeks of age. The surrounding buildings did not receive any damage.

Ulrich said there were no injuries, either to employees at the facility or the firefighters. He estimates that there were approximately 40 fire personnel on scene, as was the Wakefield rescue unit.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and the number of animals lost is also unknown.
