AREA FOOTBALL – Wayne gives another ranked team a scare

Here are Friday’s area football highlights:
Blue Devils just miss road upset – After playing the defending state champions last week, the Wayne football team put a scare into the 2014 state champs before falling to Boone Central/Newman Grove 41-37 in an exciting matchup in Albion. Tyler Pecena had another big night, rushing for more than 200 yards and having a hand in three touchdowns. He rushed for scores of 4 and 79 yards and caught a late touchdown pass from Beau Bowers. Bowers threw two scores on the night, including a 60-yard pass to Ryan Jaixen. Wayne is 0-2 on the season and plays next week at Arlington.
Trojans light up the scoreboard again – The Wakefield Trojans racked up another big night on the scoreboard at Eaton Field, posting a 60-28 win over Homer to improve to 2-0 on the year. Solomon Peitz had a great night under center, going 7-for-7 for 164 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for another score as the Trojans cranked out more than 380 yards in total offense. Daniel Nuno rushed for 106 yards and two scores, and Esgar Godinez had a touchdown run as well. The Trojans are off next week and play at Pender on Sept. 16.
Second quarter dooms Winside in home loss – The Winside football team was looking to go 2-0, but Fullerton scored 36 unanswered points in a 52-20 win Friday at Winch Memorial Field. Winside tied the game at 8-8 on Trey Meis’ one-yard run late in the first period, but Fullerton built a 36-8 halftime lead and never looked back. Brandon Watters hit Koby Ellis for a 75-yard touchdown pass and Brody Meis connected with Mason King on a late touchdown score for the 1-1 Wildcats, who are idle next week and host Scribner-Snyder on Sept. 16.
