Wayne High suffered its first loss of the year in a high-scoring shootout at Pierce Friday, dropping a 50-34 decision to the Bluejays.
Wayne came out swinging in the first half, taking the opening drive the distance and finishing on a two-yard dive by Beau Bowers for an 8-0 lead.
Pierce came back to tie the game, but the Blue Devils came right back with Bowers and Mason Lee connecting on a 13-yard pass for make it 16-8.
Wayne’s passing game was working well in the first half. Lee caught another score on a 56-yard pass, and Ryan Jaixen made an acrobatic catch for a 10-yard score to make it 28-20 Wayne at the half.
Pierce tied the game on their opening drive of the third quarter, but Wayne responded on another sneak by Bowers to make it 34-28.
Pierce responded with another score to tie the game, then added two more in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The 5-1 Blue Devils are back home next week for a homecoming matchup against undefeated West Point-Beemer.
