Here are Friday’s area football results:
Wayne hangs on for upset at Scotus – Wayne built a 16-point fourth-quarter lead and saw that lead reduced to a field goal before Juan Vergara popped an 80-yard touchdown run to seal Wayne’s 43-33 upset of No. 8-ranked Columbus Scotus in the season opener for both teams at Pawnee Park in Columbus. Wayne never trailed in the game, breaking a 7-7 tie and building a nine-point halftime lead. Mason Lee had a punt return for a touchdown, Beau Bowers threw a pair of touchdown passes and Vergara broke two long touchdown runs and added a 30-yard field goal to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 start. They face another preseason-ranked team at home next week when they host Boone Central/Newman Grove.
LCC can’t keep up with Randolph – Laurel-Concord-Coleridge scored first on a fourth-down play, but couldn’t keep up as they dropped a 60-20 decision at Randolph. Izac Reifenrath hit Noah Schutte for a 43-yard pass on fourth down to give LCC the early lead, but Randolph scored three straight touchdowns to take control of the game. Reifenrath and Schutte connected again on a 36-yard pass, but Randolph would add three more scores to build a 46-12 halftime lead and go on to the win. LCC will play their home opener next week against Wynot.
