AREA SPORTS – Area teams compete in L&C first round

Here are highlights from first-round action in the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament:

Girls Bracket
Lady Eagles fall in play-in game –
The Allen Lady Eagles dropped a 41-32 decision to Creighton in Friday’s play-in game at Homer. Bri Hingst had 18 points and Madisen Schneiders added 12 for the Lady Eagles.
Winside girls fall to Ponca – Ponca jumped out to a 15-1 lead in the first period and pulled away for a 72-39 win over Winside in first-round action Saturday at Ponca. Callie Finn scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats, while Alex Bargstadt added six points.
Wakefield defense takes care of Wausa – Wakefield pulled off a first-round upset as the 11th-seeded Trojans beat sixth-seeded Wausa 38-16 on Saturday in Randolph. Savannah Nelson and Jessica Borg each scored 11 points to lead the Trojans in the first-round win. They will face Randolph on Tuesday in Winside.
Big lead gets away for LCC girls – LCC let a 19-point first-quarter lead get away in their hopes for a big first-round upset, as the 14th seeded Lady Bears lost to host Randolph, 63-60. LCC had a 20-0 run in the first period to take a 26-7 lead, but third-seeded Randolph came back to get the win. Katie Leapley had a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Katelyn Cook led the Lady Bears with 16 points and Emily Hangman added 14.

Boys Bracket
Wakefield beats Winside in first-round tilt –
Wakefield pulled away in the second half to beat Winside 59-36 in a No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup Monday in Winnebago. The Trojans led 23-19 at the half, but outscored Winside 36-17 in the second half to get the win. Isaac Camarena scored a game-high 22 points, Solomon Peitz added 16 and Parker Lehmkuhl scored 10 for the winners. Brandon Watters and Dylan Brogren each scored 12 points for the Wildcats.
Allen falls to No. 2 Wynot – Allen hung tough with No. 2 seed Wynot early, but the Blue Devils pulled away to beat the No. 15 Eagles 52-34 Monday at Wynot. Tayler Kumm and Garrett Brentlinger led a balanced attack with seven points apiece for the Eagles.
LCC boys pull away for 86-57 win – Fourth-seeded Laurel-Concord-Coleridge used a 14-0 second-quarter run to take control and come away with an 86-57 win over Plainview Monday at Laurel. Izac Reifenrath scored a game-high 25 points, Jayden Reifenrath added 17 and Noah Schutte put in 11 for the Bears. The Bears move on to a Thursday matchup with Walthill in Winnebago.
