Here are Thursday’s area highlights:
Boys Basketball
Bears avenge loss to Trojans – The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys avenged a loss in the finals of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout with a 51-46 win at Hartington Cedar Catholic. Jayden Reifenrath had the hot hand, going 10-of-12 from the field and finishing with a game-high 22 points. Trey Erwin added 12 points and Izac Reifenrath put in six. The Bears play host to Class C-1 top 10-ranked Winnebago on Friday.
Winside boys come up short – The Winside boys basketball saw a fourth-quarter led slip away as Hartington-Newcastle posted a 53-46 win at Winside High School. The host Wildcats led 36-35 going to the final period before the visitors were able to come back and get the win. JaShaun Vyborny led the host Wildcats with 14 points and Dylan Brogren added 13.
Girls Basketball
LCC girls fall to Hartington CC – The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears dropped a 45-22 decision at Hartington Cedar Catholic. The hosts built a 10-point halftime advantage and went on to the 23-point win. Emily Hangman led the Lady Bears with six points, Bethany Kardell added five and Katie Leapley had four. LCC plays host to Winnebago on Friday.
Winside girls lose battle of Wildcats – The Winside girls basketball team couldn’t get anything going offensively Thursday and dropped a 57-8 decision to Hartington-Newcastle. The visitors limited Winside to a single free throw in the second half. Callie Finn and Alex Bargstadt both had four points for the Winside girls.
