AREA SPORTS – Wakefield wins on buzzer-beater

Here are Tuesday’s area sports highlights:

Boys Basketball
Camarena game-winner lifts Trojans –
Wakefield’s Isaac Camarena hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer to give the Trojans a 45-43 win over Randolph in action Tuesday at Wakefield High School. The two teams battle closely throughout the evening, and Randolph tied the game on a 3-pointer by Andrew Schnoor with less than a minute to go. Wakefield ran the clock down for a final shot and Camarena’s 15-footer hit the nets as time expired. Camarena finished with 19 points and Jose Sanchez hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12. The 4-0 Trojans host Stanton on Friday.

Bears pull out win on the road – Laurel-Concord-Coleridge remained unbeaten at 5-0 with a 69-65 win at Ponca on Tuesday. Two LCC seniors finished with double-doubles, as Mason Forsberg scored a team-high 22 points had had 13 rebounds, while Jayden Reifenrath put in 16 points and grabbed 13 boards. Izac Reifenrath poured in 13 points and Trey Erwin added eight. The Bears travel to Plainview for a Friday matchup.

Two-game win streak ends for Allen – The Allen boys basketball team saw their two-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday as they dropped a 57-31 decision at Hartington-Newcastle. The 2-4 Eagles are off until the Verdigre Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29.

Girls Basketball
Wakefield girls fall to Randolph –
The Wakefield girls battled back from an early 14-point deficit, but couldn’t maintain the momentum as they dropped a 47-34 decision to Randolph at home Tuesday. Wakefield trailed 18-4 early in the game, but went on a 13-0 run to close the first half, then hit a free throw at the start of the second half to tie the game at 18-18. Randolph regained the momentum late in the fourth quarter and hit free throws down the stretch to get the win. Jessica Borg had 12 points and Kenna Mackling added 11 for the 1-3 Trojans, who host Stanton on Friday.

Second-half effort helps Ponca past LCC – The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears held their own for a half, but couldn’t keep pace down the stretch as Ponca posted a 61-40 win at Ponca High School. LCC trailed by seven at the break, but were outscored 26-12 in the second half as they fell to 1-4 on the season. Katie Leapley and Emily Hangman each scored nine points, Katelyn Cook added six and Lorna Maxon had five for the Lady Bears. LCC plays at Plainview on Friday.

Lady Eagles winless after loss to Wildcats – A slow start hurt Allen in action Tuesday as they dropped a 60-33 decision at Hartington-Newcastle. The Wildcats jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one period and maintained that advantage on their way to the win. Bri Hingst led the Lady Eagles with 16 points and Madisen Schneiders added 12. The 0-7 Lady Eagles are off until the Verdigre Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29.
