Here are Thursday’s area volleyball highlights
Wayne goes 2-0 in pool play — Wayne High was spotless in their pool at the Northeast Nebraska Classic Thursday in Pender, dismissing Tekamah-Herman (25-15, 25-22) and Pender (25-4, 25-9) in straight sets. In the Tekamah-Herman game, Kylie Hammer had seven kills and Lauren Pick and Ashton Boyer each had six. Allison Avery had 19 assists. Defensively, Hammer and Emily Armstrong each had nine digs and Korrina Niemann had seven. In the Pender game, Hammer had seven kills and Boyer and Katelyn Grone each had five. Armstrong had three service aces, and Avery had 16 assists. Armstrong had 11 digs and Hailey Backer added six. Wayne will play in the gold bracket on Saturday in Wisner.
Trojans 1-1 in Northeast pool play — The Wakefield volleyball team went 1-1 in pool play at the Northeast Nebraska Classic, defeating BRLD 25-23, 25-21 and losing to Wisner-Pilger 25-13, 25-20. In the BRLD game, Jessica Borg had six kills and Andrea Lopez and Breanna Chase each had three. Misty Beltran recorded two ace serves, while Chase had eight assists and Borg had four. Defensively, Rachel Brudigam had 10 digs, Chase had eight and Jamie Dolph had seven. Pommer had seven blocks and Borg added five. Against Wisner-Pilger, Borg had five kills to lead the attack and added four assists while Chase had three. Chase led the defense with 10 digs, Borg added nine and Devaney Brown picked up six. Wakefield will be in the Silver bracket on Saturday in Wisner.
Allen plays tough, goes 0-2 in pool — Allen played Guardian Angels CC tough but lost two matches in their pool at the Northeast Nebraska Classic, losing to GACC (25-19, 25-27, 25-19) and North Bend Central (25-9, 25-13). Against GACC, Bri Hingst had nine kills, Summer Jackson added four and Haley Stapleton had three. Cassidy Thomas had 19 assists, five ace serves and a team-best 15 digs. Hingst had 11 digs and Desi Martell had 10 digs and three blocks. Against North Bend, Hingst had six kills and six digs to lead the way. Thomas had eight assists and three digs and Stapleton had three digs. Allen plays in the Bronze bracket on Saturday in Pender.
LCC falls in five-set thriller — LCC met up with conference rival Randolph in the season opener for both teams, and the host Cardinals came from behind to win a five-set thriller, winning 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-9. LCC looked to be in position to finish the match in four sets, but Randolph came back from a 24-23 deficit to extend the fourth set and come away with the win, carrying that momentum into the final set for the victory. LCC plays at Homer on Tuesday.
Winside splits triangular at Wausa — Winside came away with a win and a loss in a season-opening triangular at Wausa. They lost to Elkhorn Valley 25-21, 25-14, but came back to sweep the host Vikings 25-10, 25-18. Winside plays in a quadrangular at Hartington on Saturday.
