AREA VOLLEYBALL – LCC drops five-set thriller

Here are Thursday’s area volleyball highlights:
LCC drops five-set thriller – The host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears came back from a two-set deficit before dropping a five-set thriller to Lewis & Clark Conference rival Randolph, as the Cardinals won 25-9, 25-17, 28-30, 12-25, 15-12. Kaci Groene led the Lady Bear net attack with 10 kills and three blocks, Bryn Schutte had eight kills and five blocks and Katie Leapley had eight kills and three blocks. Katelyn Cook had 35 assists, Mady Holloway had 11 digs and Lorna Maxon came up with four blocks.
Area teams battle at Northeast Classic – Wayne, Allen and Wakefield all competed in the first day of the Northeast Nebraska Classic at Wisner-Pilger and Pender High Schools. Wayne went 2-0 in their pool at Wisner, defeating Archbishop Bergan 18-25, 25-21, 25-22 and handling Oakland-Craig 25-10, 25-11. Kylie Hammer had 12 kills in the win over Bergan and Lindy Sandoz added seven in the win over Oakland-Craig. Wakefield was 1-1 in their pool at Pender, beating Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur 22-25, 25-17, 26-24 and losing to North Bend 25-10, 25-16. Megan Borg had five kills and Savannah Nelson had nine assists in the win over B-R/L-D. Allen went 0-2 in their pool at Wayne, losing to the host Gators 25-17, 25-14 and falling to Tekamah-Herman 25-18, 25-11. Bri Hingst had four kills and Cassidy Thomas had six assists in both matches. Action continues in both locations on Saturday.
Winside takes home triangular – The Winside Wildcats won their season-opening triangular at home, defeating Elkhorn Valley (25-20, 25-23) and Wausa (25-20, 25-19). Elkhorn Valley defeated Wausa in the third match, 25-14, 25-8. Winside will host a four-team quadrangular with Howells-Dodge, Randolph and Hartington-Newcastle on Saturday.
