AREA VOLLEYBALL – Winside, Wayne fall in tourneys

Here are Monday’s area volleyball highlights:
Wayne falls in four in Mid State opener – Third-seeded Wayne dropped a four-set decision to No. 6 GACC in the opening round of the Mid State Conference tournament at Pierce, losing 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22. Allison Echtenkamp had 18 kills and Lindy Sandoz added 14 for the Blue Devils. Emily Armstrong added six kills, Kylie Hammer had five, Melinda Longe had four and Shania Anderson had three. Sandoz and Brenna Vovos combined for 42 assists on the night. Defensively, Hammer and Sandoz both had 14 digs, Emily Armstrong had 10 and Emily Matthes had nine. Wayne will play in consolation action on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Pierce.
Winside defeated in L&C semis – Third-seeded Winside dropped a straight-set decision to second-seeded Ponca in the Lewis & Clark Conference semifinals in Hartington, losing 25-21, 25-18, 25-16. Alex Bargstadt had seven kills, eight assists, seven blocks, three ace serves and 10 digs for Winside. Callie Finn had four kills, four blocks and 11 digs. Alyssa Brogren added four kills. Sarah Wolfe had 11 assists and 11 digs. Fauneil Olander had four kills and 10 digs. Andi Bargstadt recorded three kills, three ace serves and a team-high 21 digs. Haylee Cummins had eight digs. Winside plays in the consolation match Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Laurel.
