Here are Saturday’s area wrestling highlights:
Wayne, Winside lead way at Winside Invite – The Wayne High wrestlers took the championship trophy and Winside tied for second in the 48th annual Winside Invitational on Saturday at Winside High School. The Blue Devils had two champions and three runner-up finishes, led by first-[place efforts from Cameron Muhs (120) and Mikey Reyes (220). Juan Vergara (132), Isaiah Muhs (160) and Hunter Jorgensen (285) all finished second. Thirds went to Israel Cabrales (126), Isaac Cliff (132) and Berto Vergara (195). Winside, which tied Battle Creek JV for second place, had three champions and three seconds, with Koby Ellis (106), Carter Jensen (113) and Sean Mann (126) taking firsts. Seconds were earned by Matthew Fredrick (120), Zach Morris (152) and Michael Jensen (170). Thirds went to Lane Damme (106), Edward Olander (120) and Mason King (138). LCC finished 12th in the tournament and were led by Ethan Williams, who finished third at 220 pounds.
Wakefield seventh at Wisner – The Wakefield wrestlers finished seventh at the Wisner-Pilger Invitational and came home with three medalists. Cody Thomas was a champion at 182 pounds, while Isaac Verzani (145) and Julio Sanchez (195) each finished fourth.
