Bartos, Korth run Blue Devils to first-round playoff win

Blake Bartos and Reid Korth combined for 325 yards and four touchdowns to help No. 11-seed Wayne upset No. 6 Kearney Catholic 28-21 in the opening round of the Class C-1 playoffs Friday at Kearney Catholic High School.

The Blue Devils built a 14-0 halftime lead with touchdown runs by both runners. Bartos opened the game with a 31-yard score on Wayne's second drive, and Korth followed on the first play of the second quarter with a 70-yard run to give Wayne the halftime advantage.

Kearney Catholic pulled within one score on three seperate occasions, but Wayne had an answer for the first two. Korth ended a 15-play drive early in the fourth quarter with an eight-yard run, and followed another Stars' score with a three-yard run midway through the final period.

Kearney Catholic scored with just under three minutes to play, but failed to secure the ensuing onside kick and Wayne ran out the clock to claim the win.

The 8-2 Blue Devils got 173 yards on 25 carries from Bartos while Korth ran for 152 yards on 21 tries.

Wayne will play host to 10-0 Ashland-Greenwood, as the third-seeded Bluejays blew out Cozad 53-14 in their first-round matchup. The game will be played Friday at Wayne State College's Cunningham Field.
