Battle of Blue Devils end in a split

Thursday night marked the final time both the Wayne girls and boys basketball teams were in action on the same night.

From Wynot, it was the Blue Devils at the Blue Devils.

The Wayne girls opened the night with a 56-28 win while the Wayne boys suffered a 53-47 overtime loss.

In the girls game, Wayne held a slight 9-8 lead before adding to their lead thanks to a 16-10 second quarter to go up 25-18 at half. Wayne also outscored Wynot, 17-8 in the third and 14-2 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne winning 56-28 to improve to 11-13 as Wynot fell to 12-9.

Wayne leaders were junior Haley Kramer with 18 points as junior Claire Lutter followed with nine points.

Other scoring came from sophomore Lily Gubbels with seven points, six-point scoring came from junior Elle Powicki and sophomore Alexis Legler, sophomore Mallory Redden tallied five points, sophomore Addison Frank tacked on three points as freshman Audrey Lutter scored two points.

Wayne shot 8-15 from the foul line.

During the boys outing, Wayne jumped ahead 11-4 in the first quarter and edged Wynot, 11-10 in the second to go up 22-14 at half. Wynot then began the comeback with a 15-12 third and 14-9 fourth to force overtime tied at 43-43. In OT, Wynot pulled away with a 10-4 scoring clip. Final favored Wynot winning 53-47 in overtime to improve to 14-7 winning four in a row as Wayne dropped their third straight falling to 18-5.

Wayne leaders were senior Colson Nelsen with 14 points followed by sophomore Jaxson Kneifl with 10 points.

Other scoring came from senior Kaden Keller with eight points, senior Gavin Redden tallied seven points, three-point scoring came from senior Nacho Diaz and junior Drew Reinhardt as junior Brodey Munter scored two points.

Wayne went 9-14 from the foul line.

The Wayne boys are off until visiting Pierce on Friday, Febraury 21 to close out the regular season.
