TAVARES, Fla. — Wayne State closed the 2022 beach volleyball season Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Eckerd (Fla.) to win the Bronze Division Playoff at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships.
Two of the three matches that were played went three sets. The No. 1 pairing of Taya Beller and Lauren Jacobsen collected a 21-18, 12-21, 15-12 win followed by another three-set victory from the 2’s of Kelsie Cada and Jordan McCormick 21-17, 17-21, 15-9.
Wayne State’s No. 3 group of Jessie Brandl and Isabelle Vacek fell in straight sets 21-15, 21-14 while the Wildcat No. 4 and No. 5 pairs each won by forfeit.
In the Bronze Bracket semifinal, Wayne State swept Catawba College (NC) 5-0.
Two of the five matches went three sets. Ally Beresford and Brooke Peltz rallied in the 4’s pairing to win 17-21, 23-21, 17-15 while the No. 5 pairing of Rachel Walker and Maggie Brahmer also rallied for a 12-21, 21-18, 15-9 victory.
The No. 1 pairing of Taya Beller and Lauren Jacobson went extra points in the second set to win 21-16, 22-20, Kelsie Cada and Jordan McCormick in the 2’s duo won easily 21-7 and 21-8 and the No. 3 duo of Isabelle Vacek and Jessie Brandl recorded a 21-11, 21-18 win.
The Wildcats finished the three-day tournament 3-3 and ended the season with a 14-6 record.
