Bears drop season opener against GACC

Two northeast Nebraska teams began with a week one eight-man football showdown.

From Beemer, Guardian Angels Central Catholic (West Point) hosted Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Friday.

Following a scoreless first quarter, GACC pulled away in the middle quarters to secure a 39-18 victory to start their season at 1-0. LCC fell to 0-1.

The host Bluejays began by scoring off a 41-yard run (PAT good) followed by LCC’s Gibson Roberts answering on a four-yard score (two-point conversion failed) as GACC led 7-6.

GACC then scored back-to-back followings runs from eight and 21 yards respectively (one PAT blocked/one good) making the score 20-6 at half.

Third quarter scoring favored GACC on runs from four yards and 27 yards (one PAT good/one blocked) to extend the Bluejays lead to 33-6.

GACC would score once more on a 39-yard run (PAT blocked) before Laurel-Concord-Coleridge scored twice in the fourth. Roberts ran in from 11 yards (two-point conversion failed) followed by a 43-yard passing touchdown from Roberts to Caleb Erwin (PAT failed).

Final favored GACC winning 39-18.

Roberts went 12-19 for 113 yards with one touchdown. The leading rusher for LCC was Eli Haisch with 20 carries for 77 yards as Caleb Erwin hauled in five catches for 91 yards.

Connor Korth recorded a team-high eight tackles (one tackle for loss). Eli Haish and Korth both had an interception as Korth also picked up a fumble recovery.
