Bemidji State took two games from Wayne State in Northern Sun Conference softball action Saturday, beating the Wildcats 3-1 and 5-1. over Wayne State College Saturday afternoon in Bemidji, Minn.
In the opener, the Beavers produced three runs on three hits with one Wildcat error in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for the win.
Wayne State used three hits in the fourth inning as Jordyn Breitbarth singled and later scored on a two-out double by Rachel Shumaker to give the Wildcats the first run of the game.
It stayed that way until the sixth, when the Beavers struck for three runs off Wildcat starter Riley Vanderveen to post the come-from-behind win.
Bemidji State held an 8-3 edge in hits over the Wildcats in the first game. Shumaker doubled for the lone extra base hit while Breitbarth and Melanie Alyea each singled. Vanderveen suffered the hard-luck pitching loss, allowing just three runs (one earned) on eight hits.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats outhit Bemidji State 9-7, but the Beavers used two runs in the first and three more in the sixth to finish off the sweep.
Wayne State’s lone run came in the sixth on a Shumaker double to right that scored Breitbarth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Wayne State had scoring chances in the fourth and fifth innings, but came up empty both times, leaving two on in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
Monique Alyea was 3-for-4 with a double followed by Katelyn Wobken going 2-for-4. Shumaker added a double and RBI while Melanie Alyea, Breitbarth and Sarah Hunter each singled. Nataliah Hopkins was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing seven hits and five runs (two earned) over six innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
Sunday’s doubleheader at Minnesota Crookston was snowed out. Wayne State (11-35, 5-17 NSIC), will host Southwest Minnesota State in a Wednesday doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at the Chapman Complex. They close the regular season Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders against St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.
