Funeral services for Betty J. Casey, 97, of Martinsburg will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsburg. Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery, rural Ponca.
She died Friday, Aug. 28, 2026 at the Wakefield Health Center in Wakefield.
Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.
Memorials may be directed to the Casey Family for later designation.
Betty Jean (Harder) Casey was born to Carl and Verna Harder on May 27, 1929 in Ponca. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsburg, and was a member of the church her entire life. Betty graduated from Ponca Public School in May of 1947. On Nov. 24, 1948 Betty married Vernon “Pat” Casey. To this union, one son, Vernon “Gene” Casey was born.
Pat and Betty farmed for many years - the original Casey farm east of Martinsburg. Betty was always Pat’s right-hand in the farm operation. In 1979, they retired and purchased a home located on the west edge of Martinsburg. After moving to town, Betty began the position of janitor at Trinity Lutheran Church. She maintained this position for nearly 40 years. Betty also enjoyed visiting the Ponca Senior Center enjoying coffee and fellowship with many friends. Betty’s life was filled with simple joys and cherished memories with family and friends. She was fondly known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren for her chocolate chip cookies and Reese’s bars – they all knew the freezer was their favorite spot.
Survivors include son, Gene and wife Janet; two granddaughters, Lana (Ryan) Chapman and Lisa (Blaine) Bockelman; four great-grandchildren, Casey Brentlinger, Maggie Dale, David Dale, and Bo Bockelman; sister, Judy Novak of Sioux City, Iowa; brother, Duane Harder of Laurel; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat in 1995; parents; brothers, Carroll (Maureen) Harder, Dennis Harder, and Ron (Janice) Harder; sisters, Arlene (Richard) Blohm and Shirley (Bruce) Book; and an infant sister, Sharon Harder; brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Randy Novak, Bruce Book, Richard Blohm, Janice Harder, Maureen Harder, Clem Casey, Don Casey, Bernice (Earl) Boeshart, and Mildred (Jim) Pokett.
