Big innings aid Blue Devil sweep

Two double-digit innings were all the Wayne High softball needed to sweep a triangular Tuesday at the Wayne Summer Sports Complex.
The Blue Devils cranked out 11 runs in the third inning to shut out Boone Central/Newman Grove 11-0 in the opener, then used a 12-run first inning to take care of Pierce 12-0 and improve to 15-3 on the season.
In the first game, the Blue Devils left four runners on base in the first two innings, but more than made up for that in the third as the first 12 batters reached base. Highlighting the big inning was a three-run homer by Kortney Keller, who also had a double to lead Wayne’s offensive attack.
Kennedy Maly had two hits and scored twice, Jenna Trenhaile had a double and scored twice, and Sydney Biggerstaff and Annie Kniesche each had two RBI’s. Ashten Gibson tossed a perfect game, striking out four of the 12 batters she faced in the four-inning contest.
Wayne wasted no time in the nightcap against the Bluejays, sending 16 batters to the plate in the opening stanza and taking advantage of four hits, four walks and three hit batters to post the big inning.
Trenhaile and Kiara Hochstein each had two hits and two RBI’s and Biggerstaff drove in a pair of runs in the win. Hannah Belt tossed a three-inning no-hitter, striking out four and walking one.
The Blue Devils play at Columbus on Thursday.
