ELKHORN — The Wayne High baseball team lost a lead late as South Sioux City ended the Blue Devils’ season with a 3-2 decision Friday in the B-6 district tournament.
Wayne got on the board in the bottom of the first when Hagan Miller doubled down the left field line, scoring Jacob Kneifl.
South Sioux City tied the game in third, but Wayne retook the lead in the fifth when Kneifl tripled and scored on a Miller single to make it a 2-1 game.
It stayed 2-1 until the sixth, when the Cardinals got a two-out, two-run double to take the lead. Wayne loaded the bases in the sixth and had the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the seventh, but were unable to capitalize as they saw their season end with a 9-7 record.
Kneifl and Miller each had two hits, Gunnar Jorgensen added a double and Victor Kniesche had a hit to highlight Wayne’s six-hit effort. Kneifl pitched six innings, striking out 10 and allowing seven hits and three walks in a losing effort.
