Tuesday high school bowling showcased talent on the lanes as Wayne High girls and boys moved into their second and third matches of the season.
From Westbrook Lanes in Columbus, the Blue Devils competed against the host Discovers and Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family during a double dual.
The Wayne High girls bowling team would edge Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the opening match, 12-9 despite falling in the baker game, 151-124. Wayne would then easily get by Columbus 20-1 in the second match.
The Wayne High boys bowling team would pick up wins of 19-2 over Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and sneak by Columbus 14-7 despite falling in the baker game, 267-220. The second match with the Discovers put up the defending Class A State champion, Columbus against the defending Class B State runner-up, Wayne.
Head Wayne High bowling coach Josh Johnson said, “I was extremely impressed with how both teams bowled today (Tuesday). Being able to bowl well all day can be tough but they made it look easy. It was also nice to see a few sub bowlers step up. Girls 889 is a top five school record and the boys' single and two game totals were both new school records. Now the goal is to keep working on getting better and learning something each day."
In the girls match with Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Wayne would get out to a steady start and slowly push the lead to 100 pins while taking the team pinfall win 731-621. Winning individual matches were Sammi Gubbels (137), Graycen Trautman (127) and Lindsay Niemann (226). Other scorers for Wayne in game one were Regan Fernau/Rylin Hall (95) and Madi Janke (146).
Game two would be a lot of the same for the Blue Devils. Wayne would have balanced scoring as they pulled away for the 781-588 pinfall victory. Winning individual matches in game two were Sammi Gubbels/McKaeya Becker (150), Rylin Hall (193-personal best) and Lindsay Niemann (191). Other scorers were Madi Janke (115) and Graycen Trautman (132).
Again, Wayne would lose the Baker game 151-124 but win the overall match 12-9.
During the match with Columbus, the Blue Devils would pick up where they left off after match one. Wayne would continue the solid play and would hold on for a 728-665 pinfall victory. Individual match winners were Madi Janke (137), Sammi Gubbels (116), Graycen Trautman (178) and Lindsay Niemann (173). Other scorers in game one were Regan Fernau/Rylin Hall (124).
In game two the Wayne girls would come out red hot and would build an early lead. Wayne would continue to build their lead in game two and would win the overall pinfall match 889-632 to build a 15-1 lead. WHS recorded five match wins from Madi Janke (131), Sammi Gubbles/McKaeya Becker (166), Rylin Hall (150), Graycen Trautman (199) and Lindsay Niemann (243). The 889 team score was a top five mark in school history.
Wayne would go on to win the Baker game 145-127 and take the match 20-1
From the boys match with Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Wayne would get out to a solid start and would continue to keep the pressure on the entire game. The Blue Devils would pull away and win the team match 1004-769. Individually the Blue Devils would win four of the five matches led by Dylan Jensen (227), Ben Haschke (209), Konnor Kai (222) and Aiden Petersen (194). Other scores were Jamison Meyer/Jaden Dramse (152).
Game two would continue much like game one as Wayne would get out quick and cruise to a 1008-812 victory. Individual match winners in game two for the Blue Devils were Dylan Jensen (190), Ben Haschke (190), Konnor Kai/Alex Rodriguez (216) and Aiden Petersen (230). Other scores were Jaden Dramse (182).
Wayne would also win the Baker game 160-147 and go on to win the overall match 19-2.
During the Wayne boys match with Columbus, game one had the two teams battling throughout. Wayne would hold on in the end with a 1039-988 pinfall victory. Winning individual matches in game one were Dylan Jensen (195), Ben Haschke/Jaden Dramse (207), Konnor Kai (244) and Aiden Petersen (219).
Game two the Blue Devils found the groove early and often. Wayne's sophomores would get hot and help to lead the Blue Devils to a new school record pinfall of 1133 (only 20 pins short of the all-class record of 1153). Leading the way for the Blue Devils and winning matches were Dylan Jensen (243), Ben Haschke (245), Konnor Kai (236) and Aiden Petersen (238). Another scorer for Wayne in game two was Jaden Dramse (171).
The pinfall victory of 1133-985 gave the Blue Devils a 14-2 lead heading into the Baker game. Wayne boys would lose an epic Baker match 220-267 but would win the overall match 14-7.
The two-game total of 2,141 was also a school record for the WHS boys.
Both of the Wayne High bowling teams are 3-0 and will next compete in the Boone Central Invite hosted at Kings Lanes in Norfolk on Saturday, Dec. 14.
