Blue Devil boys advance to district finals

The Wayne High boys basketball team reached the Class C-1 version of the Sweet 16 following a 59-37 win over West Point-Beemer Thursday in the C1-7 subdistrict finals at Wayne High School.

The Blue Devils (21-5) led from start to finish as they posted their second win over the Cadets this season.

Wayne built a nine-point lead at the half, 27-18, and closed the game with a dominating fourth quarter to move on to the district finals.

Colson Nelsen drilled five 3-pointers on the night and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Wayne attack. Senior Drue Davis added 18 points, with Caiden Backer putting in nine. Also scoring were Jace Jorgensen with four,m Devin Anderson and Laythn Hanish with three each, Gavin Redden with two and Mason Ley with one.

Davis and Redden shared rebounding honors with seven each and Backer had six. Anderson and Kaleb Moormeier both had five assists and Redden blocked two shots.

The Blue Devils are the No. 11 seed for the district finals and will travel to No. 6 Wahoo on Monday for a 6 p.m. matchup. The winner advances to the state tournament that begins Wednesday, March 6.
