Blue Devil boys win defensive battle, Colson Nelsen with 20 points

Ahead of a Saturday home doubleheader, the Wayne High boys basketball team competed Thursday during a regular season conference outing.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, WHS played host to Norfolk Catholic, a fellow Mid State Conference opponent.

In the boys only outing, Wayne High won 45-40 against the visiting Knights.

The Blue Devils held a 9-6 lead after the opening quarter followed by both teams scoring 11 second quarter points. Wayne led 20-17 at the break. Norfolk Catholic then took the lead following a 15-8 third quarter which was answered by Wayne thanks to a 17-8 fourth. Final favored Wayne winning 45-40 to improve to 11-1 as the visiting Knights fell to 7-4 having their six-game winning streak come to an end.

Wayne High was led in scoring by senior Colson Nelsen with 20 points on five made three’s while senior Kaden Keller followed with 11 points.

Other scoring came from junior Jace Jorgensen with nine points, sophomore Jaxson Kneifl added three points as junior Drew Reinhardt tallied two points.

Wayne made nine three’s and went 8-8 from the foul line.

Norfolk Catholic was led in scoring by senior Max Hammond with nine points as senior Braeden Burbach and junior Gavin Schutt both scored eight points.

The Knights made four three’s and finished 4-4 at the charity stripe.
