Several top performances were showcased by the Wayne High cross country program during their season opening races.
From Uehling City Park during the Logan View Invite on Aug. 27, the Wayne girls ran away from competition with 19 points to finish first as the Blue Devils boys were within striking distance on a second place team finish (44).
In the girls division, Wayne's Tayla Hurner started off the season with gold during a time of 19:53 among the 98 runners. Other top medalists came from Sarah Kuchta (fifth - 21:08.5), Elizabeth Hix (eighth - 21:32) and Hadley Dunklau (10th - 21:50.9).
During boys competition, a trio of top 15 medalists were led by Emmanuel Gonzalez (fourth - 17:49.3), Grady Maas (ninth - 18:22.7) and Camden Hall (15th - 18:33.3).
A pair of home matches took over the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium for Blue Devil volleyball.
Season 2026 began with a 3-0 sweep over Ponca (25-10, 25-19, 25-14) on Aug. 27 before adding a second 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) against Blair during a second home match on Sept. 1.
Wayne starts the year at 2-0.
In the victory with Ponca, Kamden Dobbins posted a double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs.
Mallory Redden dished out 33 assists and collected nine digs.
No stats were available from the Tuesday night outing as of printing, but head coach Nichelle Daum highlighted that Kamden Dobbins played an essential role in the win against Blair hitting and from the service line.
Members of the Wayne High girls golf programs joined a total of 52 golfers during the Wayne High girls invite on Aug. 28.
From the Wayne Country Club, the host Blue Devils finished eighth with a 529.
Wayne High was led by Hadley Woehler (21st - 112).
A busy home stretch continued for Wayne High softball ahead of upcoming road action.
From the Wayne Softball Complex, the Blue Devils started with a 2-1 victory over Tekamah-Herman on Aug. 27 along with a 13-5 loss in six innings against Bishop Neumann on Sept. 1.
Wayne is now 4-3 on the season.
In the win against T-H, Kinnley McGuire recorded three hits (one triple) while Anna Dutcher added two hits (one triple).
McGuire picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing an earned run off three hits while striking out seven batters and walking three.
During home action with Bishop Neumann, multi-hit leaders were Ayvree Abler (one double), Johnson and McGuire each with two hits. Courtney Roeber also doubled.
Alyssa Bargholz worked the final three innings giving up three earned runs off four hits while striking out and walking one batter each.
Wayne High football began their season with a home loss on Aug. 28.
From Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College, the Blue Devils suffered a 43-7 loss against Boys Town.
Wayne High (0-1) got on the board in the second quarter thanks to a two-yard rushing touchdown from William Patefield.
Easton Endicott went 10-for-20 for 80 yards with one interception.
Carter Mostek (five solo) and Waylon Huff (two solo) each recorded seven tackles.
