Ahead of a home meet in mid-September, the Wayne High cross country program took to the road for their second competition of the fall season.

From the Albion Country Club on Sept. 4, the Boone Central Invite was moved to an earlier morning start time due to heat.

The Wayne High girls won their division with 25 points while the Blue Devil boys also took home the team hardware with 44 points (one-point ahead of Battle Creek).

In the girls division, Tayla Hurner captured gold (19:38.6) on the 5k course among the 88 runners.

During boys action, Emmanuel Gonzalez was the top Blue Devil finisher in fifth (18:17.6).

In the Junior High 2k race, the Wayne girls won their division with 30 points (two points ahead of Norfolk) while the Blue Devil seventh and eighth grade boys finished seventh (89).

Calvin Lipp was the top male Wayne JH cross country runner in eighth (8:43.8).

Members of the Wayne High volleyball team were gold bracket bound during the NEN Jean Groth volleyball classic hosted by Pender and Wisner-Pilger in early September.

First from Pender on Sept. 3 during Pool B play, the Blue Devils picked up a pair of 2-0 sweeps over Wakefield (25-15, 25-17) and the host Pender (25-20, 25-17).

Moving into the gold bracket hosted by Wisner-Pilger on Sept. 5, Wayne suffered a trio of 2-1 losses against Archbishop Bergan (28-26, 15-25, 20-25), GACC (23-25, 25-20, 21-25) and Ord (25-14, 18-25, 23-25).

The Blue Devils are now 4-3.

Double-doubles were posted by  Mallory Redden (20 assists/15 digs) against Archbishop Bergan and she also had 33 assists and 15 digs against GACC while Kamden Dobbins recorded 10 kills and 17 digs also against GACC.

A fifth competition for Wayne High girls golf showcased another top 15 medal for the Blue Devils.

From Elkhorn Acres Golf Club, Wayne was short a golfer and posted no team score during the Sept. 3 Stanton Invite.

Hadley Woehler secured an eighth place medal with her 107.

A previous result that wasn't listed on the gobound.com schedule put Wayne High girls golf at the Evergreen Hill Golf Course a first time during the Battle Creek triangular on Sept. 1 with Elkhorn Valley.

Warm temperatures and high humidity canceled the final game of the NFCA Kaiti Williams Classic while rain postponed another for Wayne High softball.

From South Sioux City on Sept. 3, the Blue Devils first dominated the Cardinals in an 18-2 final over three innings.

Wayne then traveled to Papillion on Sept. 4 dropping back-to-back of 12-0 against Lincoln Southwest and 8-5 with Blue Springs (MO).

A morning final on Sept. 5 favored the Blue Devils winning 13-3 over Nebraska City before their second game of the NFCA Kaiti Williams Classic with Grand Island was canceled due excessive heat.

In recent scheduled action on Sept. 8, the Wayne at Columbus Lakeview outing was postponed due to weather as teams were warming up for the varsity game while heavy rain poured down with lightning (which was moved up in time).

Wayne now sits 6-5 on the season.

Four-game leaders for the Blue Devils were Kinnley McGuire (five singles, one triple) and Courtney Roeber (all singles) both with six hits.

A couple more touchdowns were showcased for the Wayne High football team but it wasn't enough to capture a win.

From Lincoln on Sept. 4, the visiting Blue Devils suffered a 45-21 loss falling to 0-2.

Both TD grabs were hauled in by Theo Claussen (three receptions for 87 yards) with a long of 66.

William Patefield led the ground attack on 24 attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown.
