A new meet was added to the Wayne High cross country season in 2026 taking their talents across state lines.
From the Sergeant Bluff Rec Complex in Sergeant Bluff, IA, on Sept. 17, the Blue Devil girls finished as division champs with 33 points while the Wayne High boys took third (88) during the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Invite.
In the girls division, Tayla Hurner won gold for the Blue Devils on the 5,000-meter course in 18:22.61 among the 51 varsity runners.
Additional Wayne medalists were Hadley Dunklau (fourth - 20:25.29), Elizabeth Hix (fifth - 20:26.52) and Sarah Kuchta (10th - 21:03.88).
During boys competition, Emmanuel Gonzalez captured eighth for the Blue Devils in 17:00.3.
After dropping a five-set home contest the match prior, Wayne High volleyball answered back two days later with a home five-set thriller while also going 1-1 during a week night triangular.
First from the Wayne Community Schools gymnasium, the Blue Devils secured a five-set victory over Lutheran High Northeast (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 15-7) on Sept. 17.
From Columbus, Wayne suffered a 2-0 loss against the host Lakeview (23-25, 16-25) and followed with a 2-0 sweep over Norfolk Catholic (25-15, 25-18) on Sept. 22.
The Blue Devils are now 9-6 on the season.
In the win against LHNE, Blue Devil double-doubles were posted by Kamden Dobbins (one block, one ace) with 17 kills and 19 digs while Mallory Redden (one block, one ace) recorded 47 assists and 10 digs.
Addison Frank posted a team-high 24 digs and two aces.
Two different courses welcomed Wayne High girls golf for three events.
Starting at the Hartington Golf Club on Sept. 17, the Blue Devils finished runner-up during the nine-hole outing with a 255 at the Cedar Catholic Triangular.
Over the weekend on Sept. 19 during the Boone Central Invite in Albion, Wayne High scored a 522 in the team standings to place 10th.
Back in Hartington on Sept. 21 at the Cedar Catholic Invite, WHS finished fifth (545).
During the triangular, Hadley Woehler finished fourth with a 57.
From Albion, Woehler was the top Wayne golfer shooting a 122 to finish 42nd.
At the Cedar Catholic Invite, Woehler earned a 15th place medal after shooting a 125 to lead Wayne.
After a weekend invite was canceled due to weather, the Wayne High softball team returned to their home diamond.
From the Wayne Softball Complex on Sept. 22, the Blue Devils made quick work of Ponca thanks to a 13-0 victory.
Wayne is now 9-8 on the season.
The Blue Devils started strong with a six-run first inning followed by seven runs in the second to win by run rule in two and a half innings.
Ayvree Abler recorded a double and drove in a run while Alyssa Bargholz singled, drove in a run and scored twice to lead Wayne.
Kinnley McGuire delivered a three-inning perfect game with nine batters up, nine batters down in 32 pitches (23 strikes). She recorded four strikeouts.
For the second time this season, the Wayne High football team took to the road in Class C1 Friday night lights.
From Omaha, the Blue Devils suffered a 47-20 loss at Concordia Omaha on Sept. 18.
Blue Devil touchdowns came from Easton Endicott (13 rush) and a 43-yard pass to Theo Claussen while Cameron Hays scored on a two-yard rush.
Riley Belt (five solo, one tackle for loss) and Waylon Huff (four solo) both recorded a team-high 11 tackles.
