Wayne sent 42 runners to the Nebraska-Kearney High School Invite to open the week, where there were 629 Class C competitors on the state course after the Crofton Invite was canceled due to weather.

From the Kearney Country Club on Sept. 28, the Wayne girls finished fourth with 88 points while the Blue Devil boys placed seventh (168 pts) among Class C competitors.

In the girls division, it was a rematch from last year's state final and was a preview for next month's championship race between Wayne's Tayla Hurner and Gothenburg's Scout Bell.

In the end, Bell (Jr) edged Hurner to win the Class C 5,000-meter race in a time of 19:23.84 among the 230 runners. The Wayne sophomore captured silver in 19:34.63.

Freshman Hadley Dunklau captured a 13th place medal for the Blue Devils during a time of 20:53.24.

During boys action, Emmanuel Gonzalez just missed the medal stand by one second finishing 16th in a time of 17:33.22.

A second straight road triangular was followed by a home invite on a neutral court before a home match to close out the month of September for Wayne High.

First from O'Neill on Sept. 24, the Blue Devils won in three sets over the host Eagles (25-15, 24-26, 25-22) followed by a 2-0 sweep over Cedar Catholic (25-12, 26-24).

Wayne then won their home invite played at the Wellness Center on the campus of Wayne State College on Sept. 26. WHS won all three matches in straight sets over Madison (25-11, 25-4), Wisner-Pilger (25-17, 25-13) and Columbus Scotus (25-19, 25-15).

Both Wayne High and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had their home girls golf invites canceled late in the season due to weather.

The Wayne Invite was scheduled for Sept. 24 at the Wayne Country Club and the LCC Invite was scheduled for Sept. 26 at the CedarView Country Club.

Next up for Wayne girls golfers will be the Mid State Conference meet held at the Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer on Oct. 1 starting at 10 a.m.

The Class C-3 girls District golf meet will also take place at the Atkinson Stuart Country Club hosted by West Holt on Oct. 6.

With Mother Nature on the verge of canceling additional Wayne High softball games, an indoor venue was available ahead of outdoor week night competition.

From the Wildcat Dome on Sept. 24, Wayne High held onto an 8-5 victory over NEN (Pender/Wisner-Pilger).

The Blue Devils then traveled to Columbus on Sept. 28 for a rescheduled outing and outscored the host Viqueens, 3-1 in the seventh to win 15-12 at Lakeview.

Their home game on Sept. 29 against Lincoln Pius X marked the sixth game canceled on the season due to weather.

Wayne High is now 11-8 on the season.

At Lakeview, Courtney Roeber stole the show thanks to a pair of homers (lead-off HR to start the game/two-run shot) totalling three RBI as Kinnley McGuire singled three times, doubled, drove in a run and scored four times.

The Mid State Conference tournament in Wayne has been postponed twice from it's original date Sept. 26 to Sept. 30 to now on Oct. 2 in Wayne.

#1 Wayne will open pool play at 9 a.m. against #4 Pierce before also facing #5 O'Neill at 1 p.m. (opponents flipped from recent schedule).

The Championship and consolation round will follow at 3 p.m. with the fifth place game set for around 5 p.m. against either #2 GACC, #3 Boone Central or #6 Ponca in the other pool on Fri.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to travel to West Point and face GACC on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. ahead of Class C Subdistrict play set to open Oct. 5. Seedings will be announced on Oct. 1.

With a steady drizzle falling the entire game, both Wayne and Arlington had to deal with what Mother Nature was throwing their way.

From Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College on Sept. 25, Arlington drove the field at the end of the game for the go-ahead score to win 21-15.

Wayne High fell to 1-4 on the season.

Chase Rethwisch tied the game up for Wayne on a seven-yard run but the Blue Devils missed the PAT to remain at 15-15 late in the game until the Eagles scored on the next possession to win.

Riley Belt recorded a team-high nine tackles (five solo) with one tackle for loss while Trent Hays added six tackles (four solo) and one TFL.
