With late September rain lingering over to the first of October, the Wayne High cross country pogrom made an early morning switch from one meet that was canceled to another meet that was able to take place.
The Blue Devils were originally slated to compete in the Lincoln Lurtheran Invite on Oct. 1 but after hearing the news of all the rain and a cancellation lingering, WHS made the change to the West Holt Invite at the Atkinson-Stuart Country Club.
The Wayne High girls secured a team title with 17 points while the Blue Devil boys finished third with 33 points.
In the girls division, Tayla Hurner captured gold for the Blue Devils in a time of 18:59.9 among the 76 runners on the 5,000-meter course. Other Wayne medalists included Hadley Dunklau (eighth - 20:28), Elizabeth Hix (10th - 20:34) and Sarah Kuchta (12th - 20:36.1).
During boys action, Emmanuel Gonzalez led Wayne with an eighth place medal in 17:22.8 as Landen Claussen was right behind in ninth (17:31). Camden Hall (16th - 17:57.7) just missed the medal stand by just over a second.
With several area runners looking to make their mark on the course at the next level, Wayne's junior high cross country program traveled to Pierce for a late evening two-mile run.
From the Pierce Community Golf Course on Oct. 6, the Wayne seventh and eighth grade girls finished runner-up (48 pts) while the Blue Devil junior high boys took ninth (156 pts) during the Pierce Twilight Invite.
There were 10 girls teams and 12 boys teams.
In the girls division, Samantha Nexticapan Hernandez led Wayne in sixth (13:38.79) as Maria Quinilla Lux placed 11th (13:54.54).
A correction in the girls race from printing of the Wayne Herald left out Kate Patefield (84th - 18:21.46) and had a Yankton runner in 85th.
During boys action, Calvin Lipp was the top Wayne JH finisher in 18th (12:44.94) followed by Caleb Carillo (51st - 14:23.44).
The Wayne JH runners will get another chance to showcase their talents during the Nebraska Junior High State Cross Country meet slated for Oct. 10 in Papillion at noon.
A trio of matches were on the Wayne High volleyball schedule which included a trip to Pierce for a weeknight triangular.
Starting on Oct. 1 from Stanton, Wayne High suffered a four set loss against the host Mustangs (25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 17-25) followed by a split in Pierce. The Blue Devils began with a 2-0 sweep over Boone Central (30-28, 25-18) before being swept by the host Bluejays (17-25, 21-25).
Wayne is now 16-8 on the season.
During the loss at Stanton, Mallory Redden posted a double-double with 32 assists and a team-high 17 digs. She also had three kills and two blocks.
Following the cancellation of their final two regular season invites, the Wayne High girls golf team was able to take to the course on Oct. 1 following an eight-day break from competition.
From Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer during the Mid State Conference meet, the Blue Devils finished sixth with a 548 team score.
Moving into Class C-3 District action on Oct. 6, Wayne traveled to the Atkinson-Stuart Country Club to conclude their season. The Blue Devils shot a 579 to place 12th overall.
In Beemer for conference, Hadley Woehler carded a 119 to place 17th followed by Damaris Reyes with a 134 (28th).
Top performers during the district meet hosted by West Holt were led by Daniels with a 127 followed by Woehler (130).
With a district berth on the horizon, the Wayne High softball team played five of their last six games on the home diamond.
Beginning with a regular season road finale at GACC in West Point on Oct. 1, the Blue Devils scored five runs in the sixth to win 15-5 by run rule over the host Bluejays.
Moving into the Mid State Conference Tournament in Wayne on Oct. 2, the top-seeded Blue Devils began pool play with wins of 10-2 over #4 Pierce and 8-2 against #5 O'Neill.
In the finals, Wayne suffered an 8-2 loss against #3 Boone Central.
During most recent action at the Wayne Softball Complex on Oct. 5 for the C-9 Subdistrict Tournament, #1 Wayne won 14-6 in five innings over #4 St. Paul before suffering a 14-12 back-and-forth battle against #2 Central City in the finals.
Wayne is now 15-10 on the season and will continue their postseason hopes thanks to a wildcard into the district round.
Six-game leaders for Wayne were Kinnley McGuire with 12 hits (two doubles) followed by Courtney Roeber with 11 hits (three doubles, one triple, one homer). Sidney Nelson drove in a team-high 10 runs with Roeber adding nine RBI and a team-high 11 runs scored.
Wayne High will travel to the DC West Athletic Complex on Oct. 9 during the C-7 District final. The best two-of-three series will feature #10 Wayne at #7 Douglas County West (18-9).
After trailing by three scores, the Wayne High football team traded touchdowns with the host Bison for a high-scoring first half on Oct. 2.
From Central City, Wayne High dropped a 48-27 decision falling to 1-5 (dropping their third straight).
Wayne's Easton Endicott completed 13-of-25 for 176 yards with one score and also ran the ball six times for 56 yards and scored twice.
Cameron Hays posted a team-high 11 tackles (six solo).
