A fourth invitational in eight days was on the schedule for Wayne High girls golf.
From the Cedar View Country Club in Laurel, the Blue Devils joined 10 other varsity and JV teams during the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invite on Saturday.
The Devils shot a 336 to win the LCC Invite with a new school record for 18 holes. The previous record was a 341 set in 2001.
Head Blue Devil girls golf coach Josh Johnson said, “what a day for the Lady Blue Devils. Girls came out relaxed and had some fun and the scores really showed it. I was so impressed with how the girls were able to attack the course and its difficult greens. If a bad shot happened, they just moved on to the next. Each girl played well and did some really great things. The 336 is a new school record and the girls were stoked. Even with the highest of highs, each girl immediately said, ‘it could’ve been better’. That is what makes this group so great, they won’t settle but continue to push themselves to be better. We will get back to work on Monday looking to defend the conference title on Thursday (Oct. 3).”
Following Wayne’s 336, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge finished runner-up during their home invite with a 383, West Holt took third (385), Battle Creek placed fourth (400) and West Holt JV rounded out the top five teams with a 428.
Wayne was led by Joslyn Johnson with a four-over PAR 76 to earn the first place medal. She also tied Amy Harder (2001) for a school record 18 holes.
Johnson found herself for the fifth time this season in an epic duel with West Holt’s Daleni Knust as the two would go into the 17th hole tied. Johnson finished with a PAR on hole 17 over Knust’s bogey to hold onto one shot win.
Other Blue Devil results came from Charli Sievers in third with a personal-best 81, Carli Canham followed in fourth with a personal-best 82, Lindsay Niemann took ninth (97) and Rylynn Owen (personal-best 109).
LCC was led by Skylar Swanson in fifth with a 91 as other top 10 individuals came from Clara Brummels (eighth – 96) and Harper Bruning (10th – 97). Holly Patefield placed 14th with a 99.
The Wayne High girls golf team will next compete in the Mid State Conference outing on Thursday, Oct. 3 from the O’Neill Golf Club. WHS will also host the C-3 District on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from the Wayne Country Club.
