Blue Devil girls send five to state, gold medals by Owens-Webb and Bolles to finish sixth in team race

With several Class B girls wrestling programs moving into their second day of competition over the weekend, Class A District wrestlers competed in a one-day format which included Wayne High.

From Kearney High School, the Wayne girls were listed among the 14 teams who scored points during the A-2 Tournament on Saturday.

The Blue Devil girls wrestling team finished sixth with 119 points among their 10 wrestlers. WHS will have five advance to the state tournament being a school record.

Millard West was crowned A-2 District team champ with 171 points, Grand Island followed in runner-up (156), host Kearney took third (151), Omaha Bryan placed fourth (141.5) and Schuyler rounded out the top five teams with 136.5 points.

State qualifiers for the Wayne girls will be Essynce Owens-Webb (100) and Nyla Bolles (135) both won gold, followed by Serenity Heil-Ellis (125) placed runner-up as third place medals were posted by Anna Naeve (145) and Kadence Rees (155).

Head Wayne girls wrestling coach Jason Trautman said, “throughout the season, the girls have pushed and pushed; they did what they needed to do to find success. Though the five girls that qualified wrestled lights out, there were some great matches across the board from all of the wrestlers that would make any coach proud. The future is extremely bright.”

Other scoring came from Gracelynn Daniels (115) and Megan Magnuson (130) while Lupita Alba (105), Macy Wilson (120) and Ivette Ozuna (140) were also in action.

The 2025 NSAA Individual State Wrestling Championships will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 18 (first round at 4 p.m.) along with a full day of action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 (starting at 9 a.m.) from the CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha. Championship finals will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 19.
