A fifth home game closed out the regular season for Wayne High football on Friday.
From Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College, WHS entertained Scotus Central Catholic.
The visiting Shamrocks capitalized on four straight scoring drives to build a four score lead early in the game. Final favored Scotus winning 42-7 improving to 6-3 as WHS ended their season at 2-7.
After both teams were forced to punt early in the first quarter, Scotus used a 25-yard passing touchdown between junior quarterback Carson Wessel and senior wide receiver Max Wemhoff with 4:42 left in the first quarter.
The Shamrocks scored on their next possession when junior full back Thomas Settje rushed in from one-yard (32 seconds remaining). The lead grew to 14-0 into the second quarter.
Scotus Central Catholic added two more scores on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. Senior half back Spencer Shotkoski scored on a five-yard run halfway into the quart4er followed by a 10-yard score from Settje (1:13 left in first half).
Scotus led 28-0 at the break.
Both teams were held to punts early in the third quarter until Scotus used a third rushing touchdown on 11-yards from Settje (3:17 remaining in third quarter). The Shamrocks led 35-0.
Wayne High answered in the fourth quarter thanks to a nine-yard run by junior running back Taven Ocampo (seventh score on the season). WHS trailed 35-7.
Scotus scored once more with 3:47 left in the game on a 41-yard passing touchdown between Wessel and sophomore running back Parker Newman.
Final favored Scotus Central Catholic winning 42-7.
Senior quarterback Kaden Keller went 14-21 for 151 yards and one interception. Senior wide receiver Alex Rodriguez hauled in five receptions for 65 yards followed by senior tight end Calvin Ankeny with two catches for 43 yards. Senior wide out Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren tallied two receptions for 21 yards.
Ocampo led the rushing attack with nine carries for 26 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, junior safety Brodey Munter recorded 10 tackles (seven solo) followed by Ankeny with 11 tackles (five solo). Rodriguez tacked on a tackle for loss.
Wayne High ran 47 plays for 213 yards of total offense (151 passing/62 rushing) while Scotus finished with 331 yards on 54 plays (161 passing/170 rushing). The Blue Devils went 2-12 on third down and 1-2 on fourth down as the Shamrocks went 6-10 on third down and 1-1 on fourth down.
Wayne High recognized eight seniors Friday night being Alex Rodriguez, Kaden Keller, Will Leseberg, Jamison Meyer, Jaden Dramse, Irvin Trujillo, Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren and Calvin Ankeny.
